One less hungry village
For several months armed gangs have been diverting the relief trucks
They stop briefly in our village to refuel and urinate
Sister Margaret’s plan included a new prayer and lesson:
Action to preserve life is no sin
Now we watch, hidden, as the truck arrives
The men get out and go into the tavern
Sister Margaret quietly climbs into the truck
Emerging seconds later as the truck begins moving
Driverless, the truck rolls downhill toward the ravine
When it crashes hurry over
Take as many packages as you can carry
And run into the jungle
Inconceivably, the truck veers away from the ravine
And crashes into the school hut
Children screaming and gunfire as the men emerge
And shoot at everyone in sight
Now, one less hungry village
